Rhodes. I love Joe Pilato's performance. He makes Rhodes a guy that you love to hate & his death makes you clench your fist, look in a mirror, & say "Yeah!"

I sort of agree, I think Steele did get screwed over at the end. He actually did have some good in him... a very tiny bit, but every now and then you saw some honest humanity shine through. It would've been cool to see him escape somehow as well. No offense...but are you fucking high?! ;D The mother-fucker was smiling and laughing as he threw Sarah and Billy into the corral. Ditto for when he kicked the shit outta John. Every time I read that "Steele had a soul" shit, I wonder if you guys saw the same flick I did! ;D ;D Haha, well I know what you mean man. He really was a dick. But you could tell he didn't really want to shoot Sarah--sure he joked and shit, but when he realized how serious Rhodes was you could see he didn't want to do it. There are a couple of small moments like that in the movie, and that's all I'm referring to.

My interpretation of that scene--as a former United States Marine Corps enlisted infantryman. Rhodes orders Steele to shoot Sarah. Steele thinks it's a joke, and rightly so...and plays a little. Rhodes pulls a gun on Steele. Steele is afraid--he doesn't really want to shoot anyone in cold blood. He's a bully--a coward, at heart. But, he's afraid of being shot, so he draws down on Sarah. Look at the other people, going for their guns. The soldiers aren't looking at John and Billy--who are getting ready to blast away at Steele and Rhodes. They're looking at Rhodes--if the officer shoots the enlisted Steele, I have no doubt that they too would've opened up on Rhodes. Sarah sits down...and just before she does so, Steele starts to loose his nerve... Your serve.

Well we can at least say that he had warm feelings for his military pals. You can see his anguish when he dispatches a throatless Miller. Also he seems to really get bent when Miguel almost gets Rickles killed!

I see him as the guy who is a bully just to fit in. Rhodes is a bully, so if I'm just like him, he will like me. Everyone has their weaknesses. Steele was just a poser trying to get in good with the boss, but ended up failing to do so.

Well, enlisted men are pretty tight.
Anyways....something blackie said got me thinking.
I think that what GAR was saying is that BOTH the scientists and the military were wrong.
While most fans think of the eggheads as the "good guys", the military guys were under pressure. Maybe they weren't all bad, but just reacting to what they had in front of them.
They took the risks, and their guys were dropping like flies. Logan murdered Cooper for sure, but there were four OTHER dead soldiers to account for.
Maybe he had a hand in at least a couple more of those as well?

pvt steele is my favorite. all the above interpretations are great and i agree. the guy definately had a soft spot, cared for his fellow soldiers, and i feel only did sadistic things when pushed by rhodes. all the characters brought something great to the film, but steele's the man

I wonder why Joe Pilato never did any real notable films after this (the Pulp Fiction bit part doesn't count). He'd probably be typecast as an asshole or a villain anyway...

I love the From Dusk Till Dawn that we got but it still would've been awesome to see Pilato kick vampire ass.
