I gotta say I pretty much avoided this show like the plague back in the day. I remember watching the movie with Kristy Swanson and enjoying it (I remember absolutely nothing about the movie though) and when this show came along it seemed like an affront replacing Swanson with Gellar. From previews and snippets I saw it looked cheesy as hell and the fact that all the vampires exploded into dust after getting staked just seemed to prove to me that it was a show for babies since it didn't have the stomach to depict any gore. My viewpoint back then was it was a 45minute masturbatory aid for people who hadn't worked out you could obtain naked pictures of women over the internet since quite a few of my friends seemed to enjoy it and their whole reason for watching it was Sarah Michelle Gellar in mini skirts and tank tops.
I've since started watching the show however, and its pretty damn good actually. The first season was pretty cheesy for most of it. With its monster of the week format (that fucking Hyena episode was retarded), the fact that the School seems to have an extraordinarily high murder and disappearance rate and parents continue to send their kids there, and the cartoonish fight choreography didn't exactly do much to put to rest my earlier preconceptions of the show. Despite that it had a certain charm to it that made it enjoyable. What sealed the deal for me though was the characters. Whedon sure knows how to flesh them out and make them feel like real people eg Seeing Buffy depicted as a fragile youth and Giles with his rebellious streak were what got me hooked. The Introduction of Spike and Drusillia were a very welcome addition to the cast and provided a good breath of fresh air into the franchise.
So does anybody or did anybody watch this show when it was on?
