Before there was Shaun of the Dead, there was Bio Zombie, a Hong Kong zombie flick set in a mall. It's the bastard child of Dawn of the Dead & Mallrats. There's a lot of slapstick & goofy comedy in the movie but at times it is really serious.
The main heroes, Woody Invincible & Crazy Bee, start out as a pair of bumbling goofs but by the climax, they turn into a pair of tough & brave heroes. They're both very funny & likeable characters. Rolls is the love interest of Woody. Loi, the sushi boy, also has a thing for her....even after he turns into a zombie. Mr. Kui is your typical sleazy jerk that wears a leisure suit & treats his wife like crap. His wife, on the other hand, is your typical nice, cute wife character.
The gore isn't over the top but is pretty good. The make-up on the zombies is terrible but it makes the movie more appealing because it's so bad. See: Sushi Boy Zombie.
There are many hilarious scenes like the scene where this guy is working on Woody & Bee's boss' car & his crotch is pointing towards them whilst wearing shorts. They comment about how big his balls are & go in for a closer look. Luckily, we don't see any nads. Another part was when Ox, the dumbass security guard that gets turned into a zombie, performs a Bane(Batman fans) backbreaker while in zombie form.
A few times, it pays homage to the House of the Dead videogame.
The ending is a bit grim & a huge downer, especially after all they went through to escape.
If you like terrible dubbing & even worse subtitles, get the Shriek Show/Tokyo Shock version. It has two types of English subtitles: regular English....and Engrish. Ahahahahhaha! I want to pick up the Hong Kong version because it has an alternate ending I've yet to see.
