Hands down my favourite non-Dead Romero film. It's a bit of a modern vampire tale minus all of the magic & supernatural vampire elements. Pretty realistic because it's something that could happen. This was beautifully shot in Braddock & Pittsburgh, PA. One of the best looking Romero movies on film with all of the shots & locations. It also has a very raw feel to it. Great acting too....especially John Amplas as Martin & Lincoln Maazel as Tada Cuda. They really stole the show. Not really a whole lot of violence but there's enough. Nothing insanely graphic like Dawn or Day. It still works though. Is Martin really a vampire or is he just mentally disturbed? I think it's the latter. Are the black & white sequences flashbacks or just Martin's imagination? I think this is the latter too. A pure work of art. A masterpiece. Donald Rubinstein's score to this movie is beautiful.

Gotta agree, man. This is one of Romero's best films easily. Amplas is amazing in this role, he really sells it. The only other Romero movie that comes close to his DEAD films (aside from Martin) is The Crazies.

I saw little clips of this on the Dawn extra features disc. It's on my "to watch" list.

Great movie that almost doesnt seem like a Romero movie at all - seems more like something David Cronenberg would do. Amplas was damned good as well.

You boys are 100% correct.
GAR hit a home run with this one.
His best work really came back to back--Martin and then the original Dawn.
It's like a snap-shot of life in the mid-70s.
I can't get enough of it. ;D

I'm going to try to get the old Anchor Bay disc because the newer Lionsgate DVD is overmatted. The older DVD has propper matting. It was shot in full frame & the older DVD preserves that. The matting in the newer DVD actually messes up a few scenes. You don't get to see everything.
I'm a nerd when it comes to that stuff.

I'll try and see if I can find this (AB edition) used, if not I will have to settle with the Lionsgate.

After shipping it is $11.12. Quite a steal for an out of print DVD.

I think it would be more expensive if not for the Lions Gate DVD coming out a few years back.
I think I'll pass on a new copy haha. A used copy will be fine as long as it's in good condition & has the insert.

Yeah, I wonder if the people selling them for $50 realize that there are others selling them for $8?

Or people trying to sell the shitty Diamond Entertainment version of Pieces for $15. It's kind of rare but not really these days since Grindhouse Releasing just put out a 2-disc special edition. I ordered it for around $15(with shipping) & the dude sent me the Diamond Entertainment version, which I already own. I was pissed but got my money back at least. Also, the Diamond version is something you can grab for like $2 since it's a budget DVD to begin with. I don't know if the dude thought he got me or that I was dumb. I'm wearing towards trying to order another copy because I don't want some dude to send me the same old shitty DVD I already have.
End Rant.
