What do you consider to be the best zombie film outside of the "Dead" series?

The Return of the Living Dead. Hands down. I love this movie. This is my second favourite zombie film ever behind the original Dawn of the Dead. It never gets old.

I have that one as well. Love it.
I've seen the same DVD but with a lenticular cover. I think it was recently released for the Halloween season.
Honorable mention for other "best" zombie movies would be: The Beyond, Zombi 2, City of the Living Dead, & Shaun of the Dead.

I love Night of the Creeps. A great 80's horror/sci-fi films that's just as good today. And with the main characters having last names like Romero, Hooper, Carpenter, Cronenberg, and Raimi, how can you go wrong I like the detectives line in the film. "i got good news and bad news girls, good news is your dates are here". girls- "Whats the bad news"? detective- "They're dead". Slither is a pretty good movie also. dschoenike

Night of the Creeps is amazing. A movie that is in dire need of a DVD release. Tom Atkins is my lord & savior. Detective Ray Cameron is my favourite role of his.
I loved Slither. I went into the theater thinking it was going to be a shitty Night of the Creeps rip-off but was surprised. It turned out to be an incredibly fun & entertainining movie that mixed sci-fi, horror, & comedy together quite well...kind of like what NOTC did twenty years earlier. Slither had some shitty ass CGI though but the good far outweighed the bad.

(i'm pretty sure of that) I had read Tom Atkins said Night of the Creeps is his favorite film he's been in, or was that favorite horror film he was in.? Either way, great film. I swear i saw an alternate ending for it once. Something with a cemetary and a spaceship. Detecrive Cameron got up as a zombie... GRRR!! Wish i could remember that different ending. I do remember when Slither was coming out, i saw James Gunn was directing, and since i thought Dawn of the Dead remake was pretty good, maybe Slither would be alright. Like you, i didn't have huge expectations going in, but i was pleasantly surprised by how well done it was. Good campy fun. The big fat lady filling up the barn was pretty cool

Lucio Fulci's Zombie. That movie, to me, was just pure gore, beautiful gore! Amazing effects! Really puts most modern "horror" movie effects to shame.

Really puts most modern "horror" movie effects to shame. The gore effects are really good for a low budget film made in the 70's, but I wouldn't go that far. Whether you like modern films or not, you can't deny that the gore effects in most modern gory films are very realistic and well done.
