He only just passed away did he? Wow I was under the impression he died many years ago, but I guess I was getting mixed up with Richard Liberty or that guy who played Rickles.
Its a shame though as he played a memorable cowardly asshole. RIP

Good points, but he still does have some pretty inexcusable asshole moments... like when he locks the door behind Ben and doesn't let him back in. Things like that keep him firmly cemented in the "lovable asshole" category in my opinion. That in itself is a good point, but the thing is, if the zombies actually were to get in the house (which they wound up doing) Cooper wasn't going to allow them to get to his daughter, hence the locked door. He felt that by keep opening the cellar door, they were gambling with his daughter's life. He came across as an ass, but I think he was only trying to protect his family.
