Ok before I trash this I want to say I do like this movie in many ways. Its not the worst movie ever, but it is the weakest of the "Dead" movies. I am not going to whine about the acting since the acting wasnt the greatest in any of the Dead movies to be honest. Here's why the movie just didnt work in my mind
1) The timeline/technology doesnt work. The timeline starts with Night where for unknown reasons the dead are coming to life. Dawn takes place ten years later, and shows that society is falling apart rapidly because of this. Day takes place seven years later and all is pretty much lost - humans are hiding in holes waiting to die essentially. Land twenty or so years later shows that humans are trying to rebuild, and there is talk of other "outposts" so you are led to believe that there might be other communities scattered throughout the US.
The problem is that the technology used in LOTD doesnt work or fit in the timeline. All the vehicles, weaponry, and even cultural references are new. Technically all innovations and production of just about anything would have stopped dead in the mid to late 70s. How come they all drive new trucks, ride new motorcycles, and all the electronics, clothing etc seem to be recent? Even Dead Reckoning would have been impossible to build since it required sophisticated computers to operate it.It just doesnt work very well.
2) Cholo steals Dead Reckoning. Does he want to take over Fiddlers Green or perhaps become some kind of dictator? No he wants money. I kept asking why, since he cant do anything with money being its worthless. Why would you need it when you can raid any town you come across and take anything you want
3) Denbo wants to leave the city to drive to Canada - alone. Are there no zombies in Canada?
4) The Samoan character - he talks with an accent as if he literally just got off the boat. Technically he would have been in the states since at least the late 70s and probably a child at that. So why the accent?
5) The initial raid where everyone is introduced to Big Daddy in a small town. Why didn't the people just wipe the rest of the zombies out instead of just playing games with them? They had the firepower and the people to do it, and could have taken supplies all day and night from the town til they were gone.
6) Fiddlers Green - Ok I get the whole point about society and the separation between the rich and poor. It was a cool point to the movie. But most of the people in the city were poor, armed, and could have easily taken power away from Dennis Hopper at the drop of the hat. These people were survivors who more than likely had to defend themselves long before coming to the city so they were not sheepish in anyway. The police and military in the city came from the poor, and it would be doubtful they would have stopped the people from attempting to take over. The whole plot point while cool just wasnt very realistic.
7) Tom Savinis cameo. It was cool but I kept thinking his character has been dead since 1978. Shouldnt he just be something resembling a shambling skeleton after being in the elements for almost 30 years? And how come the other zombies seemed a little too new?
These are my seven off the top of my head. Im sure more will come to mind (Im rewatching it as I speak). I'd love to hear others as well.
