I heard that the WGON helicopter makes a cameo appearance sometime in the movie.

I just Wikipedia'd this very issue and although I know it's not a very reliable source, this is what came up:
Three actors from the original film have cameos in the remake, appearing on the TVs the survivors watch: Ken Foree, who played Peter from the original, plays an evangelist who asserts that God is punishing mankind; Scott H. Reiniger, who played Roger in the original, plays an army general telling everyone to stay at home for safety and Tom Savini, who did the special effects for many of Romero's movies and played the motorcycle gang member Blades in the original Dawn of the Dead, plays the Monroeville Sheriff explaining the only way to kill the zombies is to "shoot 'em in the head."
Additional references to Romero's original Living Dead movies include: During the opening scene of news footage, a brief clip shows a political figure from archive footage of actor Duane Jones who played Ben in the original Night of the Living Dead. This is a posthumous appearance as he died in July 22 1988. A store in the mall is named Gaylen Ross, the actress that played Fran in the original Dawn of the Dead. A sign for "Wooley's Diner" can be seen, a nod to the character of "Wooley" in the 1978 version. The character Tucker's name is a reference to Roy Tucker, one of the SWAT team members in the original. A truck from the BP corporation is seen, the same company as in the original. The WGON helicopter from the first film is seen flying into the frame in one early sequence. The film's tagline, "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth", is the same one from the first film, and is delivered in both films by actor Ken Foree. The mall-dwellers' ultimate escape plan echoes a similar attempt by a group of ex-policemen at the start of the original Dawn, while the remake's opening sequences contain at least two references to the original Night of the Living Dead film: a car crashes into a gas station and explodes, and the female lead crashes her car into a tree.
Now most of this I knew, but the thing that jumps out to me most is Duane Jones! I had no freaking idea he has a quick appearance! And Flyboy, it would seem you were correct about the WGON helicopter, very cool. I also never noticed Wooley's Diner. Makes me wanna go pop it in right now and confirm this stuff!

Some of those are a bit of a stretch, but interesting. It was on Sci-Fi last night. I caught it right when the zombie baby gets shot.

I like Ken Foree, he has been quite the actor over the years. He even played the father of Kenan on the Kenan & Kel show.

It kind of kills the the momentum of the story.

That & it looked to be CGIed to hell.

Obviously, taste in films is personal. I like the remake more than the original and have no problem admitting it.
Lots of movies cross genres and I don't really care whether the remake is classified as action or horror. It scared the bejeepers out of me, and that's no small feat for a film. Plus, there was enough gratuitous gore to firmly ensconce this one in the "horror" category as far as I'm concerned.
All that said, I do agree that slapping the "remake" tag on this was a big of a stretch, but I'd rather see it called a remake than a "re-imagining". God, I hate it when people say that.

I have to admit, while I'm a huge fan of the original DOTD, I still am fond of this one as well, mainly because it moves much faster in places and is a bit more frightening the first time you see it.

To be honest, I actually kinda liked this film, because of it's more realistic apocalyptic theme. However, there wasn't enough gore to top the original and many of the characters, I feel, got killed off either too late or too early. Overall, It was a fun movie, and for all fans of the genre (including me) it's a must-see. But, for people who haven't seen the originals and are looking to buy the remakes, I say see the originals first, remakes later. Oh yeah, and by the way, if Ken Foree and Scott Reiniger made cameos, where were David Emge and Gaylen Ross? Oh well...

There is a store in the mall called Gaylen Ross (this is her homage), and apparently at one point you can see the WGON chopper (for David Emge).

This film was absolute crap. How can a dead rotting corpse run fast like that? I was not crazy over the characters either.

How can a dead rotting corpse run fast like that? How can dead rotting corpses reanimate? They can run in Return of the Living Dead as well even though their state of decomposition is more severe than in the Dawn remake.
