I gotta go with Ben. Even though he ultimately ended up in the cellar, his plan was the most sound and reasonable... to stay upstairs and defend the house, and then go down to the cellar as a last resort.

I voted for "neither" because I'd have opted for the up-upstairs. If they'd gone to the second story, they'd have needed to only block off a stairwell. Think about it- the windows would be safe because the undead can't fly, but they still offer the option of emergency escape. With all of the effort put into boarding up windows and doors on the ground floor, they could have barricaded the stairwell five times over.
However, I'm all about getting the fuck out of that house to begin with. Barbara's thoughts in the remake are right where I'd be, all the way.

The only thing that bothers me about going up-upstairs is what happens when the entire bottom floor of the house is covered with hundreds of zeds? You have no way of escape. If you go onto the roof, you are surrounded by zeds. With the cellar, you are stuck with little to no chance of ever getting out. I guess that the better of the two would be to axe out the stairs and stay on the second floor. Atleast that way you can keep an eye out for survivors and not be trapped in the dark in a basement.

Ben. Defend the house on the ground floor then go into the basement as a last resort. It worked for him in both the original & remake despite his mortal wounds in the latter & the shot he took at the end of the original. He survived the night & more than likely would've survived for awhile afterwards.

THIS. This is the exact same thought I've always had, both in this movie and pretty much in any other zombie movie. Go upstairs then destroy em!

It would be freaky as hell having 100+ zeds stumbling about downstairs, and you are right there. I think it would work best in a multiple (3+) story building. That way you could have some distance. I don't think I could sleep with the moaning noises 6 feet below my head.

Yeah I agree that's a damn great idea. The zeds aren't going to be able to get to you in that case unless they're ROTLD zeds led by the Billy zombie with his big fucking ears & slicked back hair.

No matter where you end up inside of the farmhouses of the films you're going to end up within spitting distance of zombies and their moans. I'm with you about wanting as much space between me and them as I could get, though. Is there a skyscraper option?

A skyscraper would be prima. Then you could have many buffer levels, just incase one got above the first floor. Or you could set booby traps. One day after classes end, I'm gonna draw something up, what the hell.

Scan and upload, man!
I'll draw something soon. Be warned though, I draw like a 2 year old.
EDIT:
I need to get a copy of Auto-Cad, now that would be a real plan drawing!

I have to go with neither as well, Ben's plan had the problem of having to protect every entry and exit with limited resources and man power stretching the survivors thin. Coopers plan had the issue of nowhere else to retreat to, so they were fish in a barrel if that door couldn't hold. Not to mention probably a lack of ventilation down there so you can imagine how smelly it'll get in there after someone has to pitch a loaf into a bucket. Upstairs has the benefit of a single entry point, and plenty of ventilation, in case a lot of people have to empty their bowels
