Even though Romero claims there was no message or commentary on racism or race relations, I have to think otherwise. From the constant "battle" between Ben and Harry over who was right (with Harry being stubborn as all get out) down to the rednecks shooting Ben, the only remaining survivor (who just happened to be black). I also know that the scene where Ben slaps Barbara caused quite a stir back in that time.
There just seems to be WAY too much pointing toward a racial message in NIGHT. Makes me wonder why George Romero discredits any of it.

I agree.
There is no way that all of this was done coincidentaly. All of the things that you pointed out are the proof that's in the puddin. It seems that GAR flip flops on a lot of things. I thought that at one point I read that he intentionally put a black man in the lead role. But now he denies it.

I agree with you dudes. I don't really have much to add to that at the moment.

I think that's what Romeo had in mind for his statement as much as Dawn was about consumerism.
