I saw this issue raised on another forum and thought it merited discussion.
(I'm referring to the Directors cut version) If you remember the scene when Stephen goes to the police dock, Stephen pulls back the dead police dispatcher and we see he has a bad face wound or possibly bullet wound to the head. Who thinks he died from a zombie related attack or was just shot by his fellow officers?
I never really used to think much of that scene always just assuming maybe a zed got to him or the station got attacked and everyone was hiding and ready to flee since things were too dangerous; however, the more I think about it the more I think he was shot by Pilato and the others.
Here's my theory on that matter, essentially we have a state of emergency with martial law being declared and its hands on deck for all emergency personnel. In a situation like that emergency services are going to need every little bit of manpower and every resource at their disposal. Now to get back to the police looters (if they're even policemen?) are essentially looking to desert their posts and requisition all the supplies within the dock. Now if the police dispatcher was a dedicated or duty bound cop, he'll probably take great issue with going AWOL and stealing all those supplies for his own needs, when they'll likely be needed in the near future. Already you can see the friction that'd create with the cops who want to desert. Also since he's a dispatcher he could radio that information back to HQ and ruin their plans for a get-away.
Ergo they have a pretty good reason for putting one in the back of his skull.
In my eyes their behaviour certainly seems to indicate they shot the dispatcher. Its just all the little things that point to them shooting their fellow officer:
Hiding out of sight in the police dock when they hear a Helicopter and squad car approaching. The way "Got any Cigarettes" cop reaches for his rifle when the squad car gets closer. The way the Joe Pilato looter initially tries to blame things on Fran & Stephen with his remark "We caught your friends here trying to steal Company Gasoline". Its like he was testing the waters to see if the squad car cops knew Fran & Stephen, and if not could place more blame on them. Quite frankly the whole scene could've turned out differently had the squad car not been Roger & Peter, you could've ended up with Fran and Stephen being the fall guys and being accused of looting and killing the radio operator.
Anyway what are other people's thoughts on the matter? Do you think they shot the cop or a zombie got him? Or some other explanation
