I just saw the sequel on friday. It was okay.
None of the original characters are in it.
London is "cleared" of infection. Some US NATO forces help the UK get things under control. It took 24 weeks to contain the infection. The story revolves around one familys journey with in the city. I don't want to give too much away.

I own both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.
28 Weeks is a pretty solid continuation of the series. While initially letdown that Cillian Murphy wasn't in the sequel, I later came to appreciate that it might have come off a little... forced. Like, how would Jim end up in that situation again? So I liked that it was an all new cast of characters. I also like that the tone of the film was very different than the original, and it sort of stands on it's own two legs. While I vastly prefer the original due to it's vibe and lonely atmosphere, 28 Weeks Later is sure to please people who stray away from films with an isolated feeling. My main beef is the ending... without giving too much away, I didn't like how the ending set up a sequel.

Yeah, the ending was very predictable once it got within 10 minutes left.
It was a decent continuation. It just didn't seem as solid as the 1st one. Very enjoyable though.
I actually prefer the isolation deal. That's what was so good about the 1st. A few people trying to find haven in a town overrun by enraged minions.
I think that you could almost watch 28 weeks without wathing 28 days and still understand what was going on.

I absolutely LOVE films that have an isolated feeling. I think that's what drew me to Romero's films growing up... in NIGHT, they were isolated inside a remote farmhouse, in DAWN a big empty mall, and in DAY, an underground bunker with a dwindling number of humans. Perhaps this is the reason I tend to not enjoy LAND and DIARY more... these films had little or no seclusion (LAND especially).
I've said it before, but that opening in 28 Days Later... in the hospital and in the city... are some of my favorite scenes in any horror movie. I just love the post-apocalyptic feel. I tend to really love any films with this aspect... the recent I Am Legend is a prime example.
