I know Dawn has rabid fans who will all but kill for it, but I feel almost the same for Day.
In Dawn you could believe that humans could fight back or at least survive the zombies (the television broadcasts, the talk of "patrols", and most important the biker gang at the end).
Basically you felt as long as people could work together and could find shelter and weapons they could conceivably just wait til the zombies rotted to nothing.
In Day you felt that all was lost. There were no tv broadcasts, no biker gangs looting the country, or patrols. Just this band of survivors hiding in a hole getting on each others nerves. Heavily armed survivors I might add, in a government operation that was unraveling, and was clueless about what its own mission was. To make matters worse, everyone was starting to get flaky. The soldiers were now more or less shell shocked undisciplined beer guzzling, pot smoking thugs under command of very nutty Capt. Rhodes. The scientists worked under "frankenstien" himself a nut who wanted to domesticate zombies and not eradicate them.
You also had the tense sexual dynamics of the one woman trapped in a hole with roughly 12 armed men. This eventually comes to a head later, but it is always an underlying theme of the movie.
In Dawn you had a ratio like this but there was never the tension between the characters. You never got the feeling that Roger or Peter was trying to mack on Fran. You did get that feeling in Day where constantly you looked for Rhodes or his men to start raping at the drop of the hat.
The effects and which are better in each movie are debatable. Personally I prefer the SFX in Day to Dawn. Others don't. To me they shouldnt even be part of the debate since both movies to me are story driven.

I feel the same 2,i prefer day over dawn any day of the week,its darker,the gore is the best ive seen and theres a real sense of dread and fear,i only wish there was more above ground scenes the original runtime was 126mins but was later cut to 102-103mins,its the best zombie movie ive ever seen id love to see georges original script get made,it would have been awesome.  I love you but im losing my mind! |

Guys...and blackie, you know that you're my brother from another mother and all....but I honestly think that Day is a chunk of shit. In alot of ways, Day was my first zombie love. I'd seen Night, and I liked what I saw. I'd seen bits of Day and Dawn in "Scream Greats Volume I--Tom Savini", and I couldn't wait to get my grubby little paws on some more Romero ghouls. My local video store eventually got both on VHS, but some blow-job artist actually broke the Dawn tape...so I actually saw Day first. I shoplifted it, sight unseen, and took it home. I thought the beginning was great, and the ending was evil as fuck. But the middle bored the shit outta me. I watched it over and over again, day after day...and with alot of other things, I began to like it because of repetition. And, I think alot of fans fell into that same niche because Day was pretty much all we had for a long time--they confused familiarity with liking it. Anyways, I got to the point where I just couldn't watch it anymore...after about a 1000 viewings. And, that's not an exagerration. And, I didn't watch it for about fifteen years...until I moved to Fort Myers. After learning the history behind the film, and reading the original script, I can't help but look at it as the chunk of shit it is. It's a let down. A cop-out. GAR took a script that was near and dear to his heart and gutted it...turning it into nothing more than a vehicle for Savini SFX--hoping that it would be enough to give him another hit because he so desperately needed one after 2 bombs and a mediocre success followed in the wake of his success with Dawn. It's a disappointment, to say the least. And, don't even get me started on Land....  |

Tanner, Goon, your both hitting the Heini again I think. This movie explored the entire claustrophobic feeling if you were a liberal in the 80s. It was how Romero was seeing the US since everyone was turning into rabid conservative nutballs (kind of like I am now) back then. The movie was like the zombies were the outside world and only we were trapped in the bunker with Reagan. Liberals like Romero were all but jumping off buildings back then they were so depressed and angry.
(Btw - thats actually kind of preferable to me personally whether were about to be invaded by Russians or zombies. Reagan would kickass.)
I kind of got the same feeling when Clinton was in charge only in that case I preferred Captain Rhodes.

Exactly, Knight. People give "Day" shit ratings, but as Romero has pointed out the films explore how different parts of the world are handling the zombies situation. And a military bunker attempting to cure zombies, is just a excellent place to visit.
Dawn, has a horrible beginning, if it started at the apartment complex instead of the television station it would have been better. The screne with the mob of motorcyclists was completely pointless; it would have been better if they were a mob of zombies breaking in. And overall the ending was lame, and did not thrill me.
This proves that everyone has a different view on movies.

I met George Romero about a month ago, and I heard him say with my own two ears that DAY is his favorite in the series.
I only thought it would be fair and relevant to the conversation... although I myself disagree with the man (I'm a DAWN-aholic).

Uh...the film basically DID start at the apartment complex.
As for the scene with the biker gang--you're right. It smacks of GAR's shit screenwriting. After the Mall is walled off, the film is effectively over. He had to think of some way to get the zombies back into the Mall while giving them more people to eat--for all that bullshit talk about social commentary, even he knows that the bread and butter of the series is the balls to the wall gore. So, he pulled that out of his ass and just threw it in.

I would have handled the whole biker gang invasion scene better - for instance it would be sans the pie fight and the clowning etc. To me it showed that if people could band together and arm themselves they could survive the zombies as long as they were mobile or had a fortress to hole up in. I just think he blew it by making the bikers seem more like clowns than survivors who were on a looting spree. |
