My favourite NHL player of all-time was a Red Wing: Steve Yzerman. Yep. Stevie Y. No arguments from me on that one! I'm proud to say I watched his entire career, and I'd still take him over Gretzky or Lemieux at the end of all of their careers. Yzerman developed into an excellent two-way player, where the other two just stayed flashy on the forecheck.

Lemieux & Gretzky were both greats of the game but I always thought of Stevie Y as the better player amongst the three.
I remember when the Wings won the Stanley Cup two years in a row in the late 1990s. Amazing. Their line-up from that era was among their best. I was happy to see them win it again last year.

AH! If I had known you guys were Wings fans, we'd have been talking this shit up for ages!!! I'm a HUGE Wings fan... in fact, I was just at the December 30th game against Chicago (the prelude to the Winter Classic) where we beat em 4-0. I hate Patrick Kane with a passion so it was real nice to see him get smoked into the boards a few times (that hardcore hit from Cleary was right near my seat so I got a nice close-up look!). The Winter Classic was amazing. I was worried that with all the shit penalties being given to Detroit in the 1st that we'd get screwed out of a win, but true to form my beloved Wings showed who was boss. I love Yzerman as well, and it's great to see 'ol 19 still with the organization. However, my favorite Wing is and always will be... Without a doubt THE best player in the NHL. Let's talk Wings, baby!

I wish that Orlando still had The Solar Bears. But, just like every other sports team, they left. This just isn't a sports town. It's wierd how that works.

Let's talk Wings, baby! Lidstrom is captain!? Damn, it really goes to show how I'm not keeping up with things anymore. Lidstrom is awesome as hell & a player I've always loved. I wish Fedorov still played for the Wings. I loved him back in those days. I hear he's pretty hated around those parts nowadays. Vladimir Konstantinov...man that was a shame what happened to him. He was one of my favourites as well. Part of the great "Red Army" of the Wings back in the day.

Lidstrom is the man, and is proof of why hockey is the greatest sport. He's a class act and he continues to (quietly) do his job like no one else can. Tony- I'm mucho jealous of you're being at that game. Cleary is one of my current favorites, and when he rocked Kane the other night my neighbors probably heard me yelling! Flyboy- I had a Nike ad from 1995 or '96 on the wall in my house with Federov on it ("A goaltender's worst nightmare", it said) back in the day. I hear you about liking him, but after he sat out for that one season (signing in time to make the playoffs) I knew his days in Detroit were numbered. Funny, he has never come close to his output from that time since leaving here. I blame Anna Kournikova...

You guys are making me feel like I'm missing something. I guess I will have to watch more hockey, and see if I like it a bit more.

FE, I remember the Solar Bears- they played in the same league as the Detroit Vipers, a team I sorta' followed back in the '90s. The guy who owned the Solar Bears also currently owns the Grand Rapids Griffons, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, and his son (Dick DeVos, Jr.) unsuccessfully ran for governor up here back in '06. Lots of hockey ties up here in MI.

Flyboy- Yeah, Lidstrom has been captain ever since Stevie Y retired. I agree with you, he is an awesome player. Like I said before, I take him to be the best in the NHL hands down.
Fedorov was good back in the 90's, but then he got cocky. When he left Detroit, it was definitely on bitter terms (especially with the fans). It all caught up with him though. He hasn't been an elite player in ages. He would probably kill to be back in Hockeytown now.
As for Konstantinov... man, talk about tragic. He was actually a really awesome player, and a very integral part of the famed "Russian Five". I was happy to see him still included as a player when the Wings won the cup though, even though he didn't play anymore. Great guy.
223- That's EXACTLY what Lidstrom is... a class act. He's the perfect leader, and a great guy off the ice to boot.
And yeah, I don't blame you for being jealous about me being at that game, haha. It was such an intense atmosphere... almost like a playoff game. It was really cool too cause it was the 700th meeting of those two teams, an NHL record. And I generally really like Chicago, minus Patrick Kane. They compare that douche to Gretzky, and it makes me sick. Kane sucks. They have Khabibulin too, which I think is one hell of a goaltender. I really dig him. It was a shame that at the game, both my top fave players (Lidstrom and Osgood) were out, but it was still a great line-up. Zetterberg and Datsyuk are legendary, already so early in both their careers... and with Hossa now on our roster... man, brutal. Almost every player is quality... from Hudler and Franzen to Holmstrom and Kronwall. The only Wing I don't care for all too much is Lilja. His only real contribution to the team is his toughness and willingness to fight.
Here's a cool fact you guys don't know... back when I was in high school, I played a year of JV soccer (my best friend, who was on varsity, convinced me). Anyway, Maltby came to a soccer game at my school once, because a friend of mine had a sister who was dating him. Pretty cool.
Flesh Eater- Yeah, hockey is great. It's the only sport I really enjoy, and around Michigan it can be something of a religion with some folks.
