I have yet to run into anyone who actually likes any of GAR's dead flicks post-Day who like the movies based on their own merit, and not out of sheer fan loyalty blow-jobbery.

It's been two years since it came out and I finally got around to seeing it. My verdict. Its different. Its not terrible but its not that great either. It's ok For me the CGI is a non-issue. Sure the heads on the pikes looked a little silly, but its not a deal breaker. Special FX are merely a means to propel the story along not the frame that holds everything up for me. Where this movie lets itself down is the characters. The most likeable character I found was Kenny, but he got killed off too soon, everyone else feels two dimensional. Sarge - Gruff. Likes cigarettes Tomboy - Lesbian Cisco - Mexican, oh and he's Catholic The Boy/Kid - Smart Alec, tech Savvy Muldoon - Irish, evil O'Flynn - Irish, stubborn, crafty O'Flynn daughter - dislikes fighting Because of this I never felt truly invested nor really identified with the supposed protagonists of our story. Reading up on wikipedia about the film and apparently Sarge used to be a full bird colonel before being demoted after a failed raid and his name was Crockett. When the hell was that established?! In saying that though what I liked about this movie was the new setting. It was good to see the effect a zombpocalypse had on an already established community that is naturally isolated. I liked the wide open spaces and scenery, and the islands inhabitants efforts to maintain a sense of normalcy despite everything going on. Did anyone else find Tomboy's masturbation scene awkward? It was just like the lesbian kissing scene in Land. It just felt so out of place in this movie considering George never previously felt obliged to include a cheap sleaze scene in his 1st three zombie movies.

Yes, the wanking scene is rather uncomfortable, almost cringe-worthy. I think it is the atmosphere that gets me, just odd.
You are spot on with your character analysis.

Actually I was mistaken George has included some sleaze in his previous movies
The Ass end of a Naked female zombie heading towards the Farmhouse - Night Fran's Nipples - Dawn uh... I think there's some sexist talk from the soldiers and Rhodes makes allusions to having his way with Sarah - Day
(Was there any sleazy stuff in Diary? My memory is sketchy of that movie.)
However, the sleaze in those movies felt more organic. Its not too much of stretch that there's a naked female zombie roaming around, she could've come from a morgue or died in the shower. Fran's in bed with Stephen after they've probably had sex, and the soldiers are horny and frustrated from being stuck down in the bunker.
Going on the sleaze demonstrated in Land and Survival, I can't help but get the impression that George is either a dirty old man and become more liberal with his views; or he always wanted to include content like that but was restricted by obscenity laws or more conservative views back then, but couldn't get away with it; however now that movies are more blasé about such content he's including it because he can.

I am a loyal fan but i have to be honest, i didn't think this was as good as NIGHT let alone DAY or DAWN. I bought this on the day of it's release with very high expectations and was just a little disappointed. Saying that, i've only seen it once and can't remember a hell of alot about it. So, i owe it to the Genius who is George A Romero to give it another watch or two and as i'm very unemployed at the moment i'm gonna watch it again right now.

It's nowhere near the original trilogy, but it still beats the dick off of Diary.

I did like it more second time around, i thought i might, maybe i was in the wrong frame of mind or something the first time. I have to be in a stress free environment to watch a film properly - i had some relationship problems but things are lookin' good now. Van sprang's character is pretty cool really. We have to remember GAR is trying to cater for a modern audience as well as us true fans, so taking that in to account it was an OK job.
Oh yeah - it's defo betta than Diary.

Its definitely one of the movie's shortfalls. It just isn't as memorable as the other movies.
