I like it when remakes are different from the original , if it's the same then what's the point? I never said remakes have to be carbon copies of the original. When a remake has almost NOTHING in common with the original, what's the damn point of calling it by the same name? Give it an original title and put it out there as an original movie for crying out loud. When remakes are exact copies, it doesn't work either... just look at Psycho and it's remake (which was a shot for shot clone). A good remake, in MY opinion, takes all the key elements of the original and then puts a twist on that. A great example of this is seen in the remake for Night of the Living Dead. We got the same basic premise, same characters, same setting... but a different and interesting spin was put on the story (Barbara was badass as opposed to catatonic, Ben became a zombie, Cooper survived the night, etc.). The remake for NIGHT fuckin deserves the title it got.

Not to mention that a lot of the crew from the original Night returned. George penned the screenplay as well.

I know what your getting at, Tony. And I agree.
Dawn '04 should have never been called Dawn. Hell, I think it would have been awesome if Snyder would have asked for GAR's blessing to carry on the "of the Dead" series with it. Maybe call it Twilight or Dusk. Something besides Dawn. It's not because we hold DAWN '78 in such high regard that I/we say this, it's because the remake has nothing in common with the original... oh wait there's a Mall.
Think about it, Zach Snyder carrying on the series with GAR's blessing. It would have been great. I think Snyder did a damn fine job with the remake, and I think it's a great movie, but it should have been called something else.

[deep response to follow...]
+1 to the above four posts.
The Dawn "remake" is a great example. I love the movie, but wish people would stop thinking of it as a remake of the original.

If the remake had a different title, People would call it a rip-off of the original Dawn.

I certainly wouldn't. I'd still regard it as a decent movie.

Same here. I think Snyder could have gotten away without naming it Dawn of the Dead, especially if he left in the slick little tips of the cap to the original and the cameos.

I thought NOTLD '90 was a great film. Wasn't that the first time we got to see Z's with realistic opaque dead eyes and make up based on the appearance of real corpses? For sure some of the performances were a tad over the top but it didn't take anything away from the film as a whole.
I think giving the Dawn remake the title 'Dawn of the Dead' did not do it or the original any favours. The original was a classic plain and simple. The 'remake' was a damn good film IMHO but may have fared better with the hardcore Dawn fans if it hadn't been pitched as a remake (which it essentially wasn't, the presence of the mall aside) and been called something else.
Now there seems to be the issue of never being able to watch one without thinking good or bad things about the other which is a shame.

loved this one, one of the best remakes,
still rate the original higher, but this was the 1st horror film i ever saw when i was like 4 or 5 so it's really important to me as a horror fanatic
