I figured I might as well put this one up since we have all seen it and it will probably cause a pissing contest. I actually liked the remake a little better at times. The only thing I didnt go for was the Tom Towles character. He was great but he was too menacing, while the original character was something of a sneak. Other than that I like it so much if I have a Dead marathon I watch this version first.
I think that even though it was a shot for shot kiss in the behind from one friend to another, it was actually done better by Savini.
I'll await my beating now

I liked this one very much.
But, I've gotta disagree with you about Tom Towles...

I didnt say he was bad, he was great. They just played him off as more tough than the original. The other dude gave you the impression that you could beat his ass pretty easy. Towles would have been a harder take down I think

Yeah he was much more of an assh*le in the remake,NIGHT is a classic theres no doubt about it but the remake was good,it didnt get released here in the uk till 1993 and i read it was made around 1989,i remember really wanting to see it but couldnt find it anywhere, tony todd was good as ben and patricia tallman did a good job as a stronger barbera, for folks who havnt seen this, see the original 1st then watch the remake, the changes are pretty cool and the ending was a lot better even though the message is nowhere near as strong as the original but its more of a fun remake and theres plenty of savini sfx.

I liked this film 200x more then I will ever like the original. Tom Savini did a excellent job, and also its an official remake with Romero's approval.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I own the VHS, but need to get my hands on the DVD.

The fact of the matter is--the remake speaks to later generations alot more than the original did. Ditto for the Dawn remake. What alot of GAR blow-job artists refuse to accept is that, like with the rest of Horror in general, what was scary thirty or forty years ago just doesn't hold up to modern audiences. People no longer consider the original Psycho scary, or even entertaining. By modern standards, it ain't shit...and the shot for shot Gus Van Zandt remake fiasco proved that ten years ago. It's to the point now where the kids of today don't like the original Dawn, but have gone for the remake in a major way. I say...just watch what you dig, and don't bother trashing the remake simply because it's there. If you have a problem with it...simply don't watch it. Stick to what you love. If what you dig is so fucking good, then you should be secure enough in your opinion of it that you shouldn't have to trash something else to justify that.

No, it actually isn't and neither is that piece of crap Day of the Dead remake. They are unofficial, and both have Ving Rhames, as different charactors.

I think he's just talking about the support and backing from George Romero.

I think he's just talking about the support and backing from George Romero. Oh....<shrugs>. The Dawn remake had his blessing. Trust me on that. He got his check...and so did Savini. In fact, when they approached Savini about having a bit part, he called GAR. The old man told him, "Hey...it's a paycheck!" And, that was that.

I liked it. Can't compare to the original because I haven't watched it yet ( I'm not much into old, b&w films ) but as a stand alone film it is quite good. I think the acting was really impressive ( especially Tony Todd). I liked the plot and the characters except harry of course. The make-up on the zombies was very realistic ,they actually looked like dead corpses in this one, instead of the cheesy blue zombies that appeared in "Dawn of the Dead" and to a lesser extent in "Day of the Dead" . I wish it had more gore though.
